Potatoes are products of high nutritional value and per capita consumption in Iran is 11 kilos more than global consumption. Ardabil province produces about 20 percent of the country's potatoes, and exports of potatoes account for 80 percent of the province's agricultural exports, but the lack of awareness of the use of inputs and the unrealistic price of these products has caused the production of this product. . One of these inputs is water that its proper management and awareness of the optimal use of the amount can be effective in solving some problems such as water deficit. In this study, two methods of maximizing profit (with estimation of production function) and minimizing the cost to determine the optimal use of water intake in potato production in Ardabil province are carried out. To achieve this goal, data collected in the 1995-1998 crop year Has been used. In the method of production function after calculating the final production of water input and equalizing the final production value with its price and solving the equation, an optimum amount of 13913 m 3 was obtained. Also, in the cost minimization method, an optimal amount of 12538 m 3 was counted. Comparison of the values obtained by both methods with the average farmer consumption indicates that water inputs are more than optimal, which can be used to reduce the loss of this vital input to some extent.
