In recent years, the importance of examining simultaneous changes in the quality and quantity of groundwater resources, especially in strategic areas, has gained the attention of researchers. This study focused on evaluating the simultaneous changes in salinity and groundwater levels in the Qazvin Plain. The Qazvin Plain is considered one of the strategic areas of the country due to its proximity to the capital, extensive agricultural production, a population of 700,000, and the presence of industrial cities. Qualitative and quantitative data for this research were analyzed over a 22-year period (2001 to 2023), and changes in salinity and water levels were examined and analyzed both independently and concurrently. Research methods included spatial analysis using GIS maps and zoning methods, including cokriging, along with data processing in Excel software. The results indicated that the amount and location of land use changes have a significant impact on changes in salinity and groundwater levels. Key findings revealed that, contrary to common beliefs, an increase in groundwater levels is not always accompanied by a decrease in salinity; in some instances, salinity increased alongside rising water levels, and vice versa. This complex behavior is attributed to factors such as the chemical composition of water and soil, hydrological flows, and changes in land use patterns. The findings of this research highlight the necessity of adopting comprehensive and resilience-based approaches in the management of groundwater resources. Simultaneous analysis of the quality and quantity of water resources, considering human and natural factors, can assist in identifying effective management scenarios. The results of this study provide a framework for policymakers and managers to make more informed and sustainable decisions regarding the preservation of the vital resources of the Qazvin Plain by better understanding the interactions between salinity and groundwater levels.
